Find the outline that feels like you
Shape describes a diamond's outline. Cut quality describes how well its proportions and facets work together; the two are related but are not interchangeable.
Round and soft outlines
Round offers a balanced circular appearance. Oval creates an elongated outline. Cushion combines a square or rectangular profile with softened corners. Compare their actual millimeter dimensions and appearance in the chosen setting.
Architectural and geometric shapes
Princess has a square outline and pointed corners. Emerald and Asscher are step-cut styles with broad, organized reflections; their open appearance makes careful viewing particularly useful. Radiant combines a rectangular or square outline with a brilliant-style facet arrangement.
Expressive silhouettes
Pear, marquise and heart shapes have distinctive outlines. Look at symmetry and how the shape sits on the hand or neckline. Pointed areas benefit from appropriate protection. Some elongated stones show a darker central area called a bow-tie; assess the particular stone rather than relying only on its shape name.
