Know what you are comparing

The 4Cs are carat weight, color, clarity and cut. They offer a useful starting point, but a buying decision also includes origin, shape, dimensions, setting and the documents supplied with the piece.

Cut is more than shape

Cut quality concerns how proportions, facet arrangement and finish influence appearance. A shape name alone does not describe light performance. A laboratory's overall cut grade is not available for every shape or report type; use only the grade actually stated on the report.

Read a report in context

Check the issuing laboratory, report number, stone description and any treatment comments. Verify the number through the laboratory's official service when available. Matching a database entry alone does not physically authenticate the diamond in your possession; a qualified examination may be needed.

Keep documents with different purposes separate

A grading report describes gemological characteristics. An appraisal gives an opinion of value for a stated purpose and date. An invoice records the sale. A warranty describes a contractual service promise. One document does not automatically replace another.

A practical purchase checklist

Confirm the stone's identity and origin; review specifications; see the complete price; confirm size and fit; read delivery and after-sales terms; and keep the invoice and any reports provided.
